Grandma, in case you’re worried, I am in fact getting enough food, and yes the food is good. I haven’t done much cooking of my own, and the few occasions I have tried haven’t worked out the best. I chalk it up to new place, new ingredients, new appliances, but really I just left the cauliflower on the burner for too long. Oops.
Fortunately, I’ve found a stomach-saving alternative: tiffins! They’re a wonderful thing. I’ve provided a little visual in case you aren’t certain what exactly is a tiffin. In each of the containers is a different, delicious food—paneer, roti, dal, sabzi, rice, etc.

SO, why are tiffins such a wonder? Why do I love them so? Because….. THEY DELIVER! Apparently this is nothing new in India. You order from a tiffin service, and they deliver a home-style meal right to your door. Even more beautiful, it’s only 50 rupees for the whole shebang (about $0.78). WHAT IS THIS CRAZINESS, I ASK YOU, WHAT!? I mean, I know very well it’s possible to get meals pretty cheap in India if you want to. There’s this little shop right by my hostel where I can get a meal anywhere from 30-80 Rs, or about 0.5-1.15 USD. That’s practically unheard of in the States. But to have it delivered, and to have it come with a variety of dishes is pretty sweet.
And tiffin networks are a pretty well-organized thing. There’s even a service in Mumbai that picks up tiffins from peoples homes and delivers to them for lunch (meaning it’s hot when you get it!). The business, developed by one man who didn’t even finish high school, has become one of the most globally successful business networks. It received a Forbes rating of 6 Sigma, meaning only one error in one million deliveries. The kicker? This is all done without the use of the internet. Here’s a bit more info on the business.
So, really, there’s no need to worry about my eating habits! I love Indian food, and I’m getting a full daily dosage of it. So cheers from me to you—now let’s dig in :)
