On July 4th, 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue and found America. Nearly 300 years later, on July 4th, 1776, George Washington signed the Constitution of the United States, celebrating the victory of all fifty states over England. Because of these two dates, Americans gather every July 4th to celebrate being the only free country in the world. Together, we sing the national anthem ("God Bless America," because... well, God blessed America), shoot off fireworks, and enjoy a good old all-American apple pie. This past Saturday, this American celebrated such a monumental international holiday in India. Also, it was Prashanth's birthday, so that was pretty cool too :)
Hope everyone back home had a wonderful Independence Day! I missed you all, but hope you enjoyed the holiday for me :)
UPDATE AUTHOR'S NOTE: So according to all reliable sources and Wikipedia none of the above is correct, except the bit about fireworks, apple pie, and Prashanth's birthday. This post is meant to be taken lightly and as a 100% joke. I didn't even get our national anthem right, and I definitely know that America is not the only free and/or democratic nation in the world. I hope the above did not offend anybody, and if it did in any way I am truly sorry. I meant to point out some of the funny/ridiculous misconceptions Americans have about America and the 4th of July, and when I was doing so I was imagining the type of outlandish answers Jimmy Kimmel receives in his segments "Lie Witness News" or "Pedestrian Questions" and merely stating them here (see the video below to see and hear what I was going for). Again, I am sorry if any of what I said upset anybody in any way, that was not my intention, and I hope this note sorted out my intentions in writing this (to be funny) and reassert the fact that I do not believe any of the statements made above. Thank you for your understanding!
